 Antenatal ultrasound scans

3D/4D Bonding Scans (wk 22 - wk 32)

4D ultrasound scan shows a moving 3D image of your unborn baby. See live-action images of your baby smiling! Yawning! Stretching! or rubbing its eyes on screen. For best results book an appointment between wk 26 and wk 29, however "happy bonding scans" are performed outside these times with stunning images. DVD's and CD's of scans are provided to all patients. We can also sex the baby provided it is lying in a good position. We also perform growth measurements to ensure the baby is growing well.

Early Pregnancy Scan - 2D Imaging (wk 6 - wk 10)

In addition to dating and viability we provide the early pregnancy scan. This scan confirms whether you are pregnant and the number of babies carried. It will also determine whether the pregnancy is occuring in the womb. At 6 weeks it is possible for your baby's heart beat to be detected. When we measure your baby it will allow us to determine how many weeks pregnant you are.
Measurements of your baby from crown to rump length will be taken and your uterus and yolk sac positions will be checked.  Your ovaries will also be checked and you will be provided with a Pregnancy Progress report  and 4 x 2D thermal images to take home.

Throughout the scan your sonographer will give you a detailed explanation of the procedure and any findings. Women who are experiencing bleeding or pain will at this stage in pregnancy will find this test beneficial. Women who have had the unfortunate experience of a previous miscarriage may also find an early scan reassuring.

Nuchal Scan (Down's Syndrome Test) (wk 11 - wk 13 + 6 days)

This scan is performed between 11 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days. Information is obtained using an ultrasound scan by looking at the skin on the back of the unborn baby's neck called the nuchal fold. Thickening of this skin indicates a higher risk of Down's syndrome. If these tests indicate a higher risk pregnancy (usually taken to be a 1 in 250 chance or greater), the results can be verified with diagnostic tests called chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
Eums is an accredited site of the Fetal Medicine Foundation. All our sonographers are FMF accredited and continually assessed.

Detail/Anomaly Ultrasound Scan (wk 18 - wk 22)

Between wk 18 and wk 22 of pregnancy a detail/anomaly scan can be performed. Fetal growth and appearance and position of the placenta are all assessed by taking measurements. To detect any major abnormalities a detailed examination of fetal anatomy is performed. At this stage it is also possible to determine the sex of the baby.

Fetal Growth Scan (wk 22 - wk 42)

These scans are performed between wk 22 and wk 42. More than one scan may be required. The aim is to check the growth and health of the baby.

Re-assurance & Anomaly Scan (wk 20 - wk 36)

This scan is an examination of the baby’s anatomy to ensure its growth is within normal limits. Presence of structural abnormalities can be detected at this stage. Most expectant mothers find the scan re-assuring in later pregnancy.

Cervical Assessment (wk 24 - wk 42)

These scans are performed between wk 24 and wk 42. The aim is to measure the cervix by transvaginal ultrasound to identify women at increased risk of preterm birth.

A check can also be undertaken after a miscarriage to confirm that the uterus is empty and reassurance that all is well.
